Everything I was ever told about being a man was a lie.
Maybe it was the same for you. I was a boy back in the 80s and 90s and even then, it was all about pulling back and not being assertive. Let others take the lead, don’t stick your head out too much. Always let others take the forefront. Don’t play any rough sports.
It led to an early twenties of malaise, underachievement in all fields of life and complete stagnation in my career. But then I took up judo. I joined the army. I started to improve myself. That was all 20 years ago now and at 42, I feel like an absolute monster.
That’s because I’ve leaned into a lot of the traditional aspects of being a man, while keeping some of the more modern aspects that are beneficial.

I’ve competed at state level in powerlifting, and national level in both strongman and judo. When it comes to physical excellence, I’ve walked the walk.
I’ve coached a world-record holding powerlifter in addition to being an instructor while I was in the army.
